The first grade year is a year of fun, learning and growing independence. We fine tune our handwriting skills and begin creative writing. Literacy involves not only basic reading methods and phonics, but also special book projects. The Spelling curriculum follows phonetic based word families.
Adding, subtracting, and word problems make up only part of our math program. We use manipulatives, tiles, geometric shapes, flash cards, wrap-ups, money, clocks, ten-frame blocks, thermometers, and more to reinforce number sense and practice new skills. Students complete a daily math meeting board and a reading and math interactive notebooks.
Exciting science and social studies units continue throughout the year. We explore apples, pumpkins, our five senses, living things, communities, community helpers, and rules and laws just to name a few. Maps, globes, charts and graphs are utilized throughout the units. We engage in science experiments through our LabLearner program in our Elementary Science Lab.
In Religion, we learn to recognize that God is an important part of our everyday lives. At the end of this exciting year, students leave with a positive attitude toward lifelong learning and a true sense of independence.
Throughout the school day first graders enjoy using the Smartboard, ChromeBooks, and our Google Classroom to practice and reinforce skills and knowledge.
